The Managing Director of GOIL, Mr Patrick Akorli, said following GOIL’s tradition of celebrating what was good about Ghana, it was proud to associate itself with such a distinguished personality whose exploits embodied what was good about Ghana.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra to introduce him, Mr Akorli described Prof. Azumah Nelson as a person who carried the country’s pride and fame on his shoulders and also became an embodiment of devotion to duty and patriotism.

“He is a personality who over a decade held the country spellbound with unrivalled boxing skills. Today, we are celebrating an icon that from a very humble beginning shot his way to the very top and brought honour to his country. GOIL is indeed by this recognition sending a message that we want to remain at the top and to achieve more laurels as a proud indigenous entity,” he said.

He said GOIL through the partnership was appealing to Ghanaians to patronise its products to help build a solid local oil company capable of staying above the competition, just as it did for Prof. Nelson Azumah during his days of exploits.

GOIL

It was incorporated as a private limited liability company on June 14, 1960 as AGIP Ghana Company Limited with the objective of marketing petroleum and related products particularly fuels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants, bitumen, and speciality products in Ghana.

In 1974, the government acquired the shares of AGIP SPA and Hydrocarbons International Holdings in AGIP Ghana Company Limited and by a special resolution in 1976, changed the name of the company to Ghana Oil Company Limited.

As the three-time world featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight champion, Prof. Azumah Nelson also won Commonwealth and African crowns.

In his acceptance speech, he emphasised the need to patronise made-in-Ghana products, which he said helped to create jobs and generate revenue for development.

“We must all support GOIL to grow by patronising its products. At GOIL, you are assured of value for money and also see Ghana develop. I am grateful to be selected as GOIL brand ambassador and I promise to work hard, promote the brand and make Ghana proud,” he said.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, commended Prof. Azumah Nelson for his achievements which required that he be celebrated.

He urged Ghanaians to emulate his humility and discipline to be able to rise to the top.
