GJA elects two new reps to Media Commission

The National Consultative Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association at a meeting in Accra on Friday, September 26, 2003, nominated Mrs. Gifty Affenyi-Dadzie, President of the Association and Mr. Yao Dziekpor, Deputy Director, Ghana Television in-charge of News and Current Affairs to represent the GJA at the National Media Commission.

The two will take over from Dr Anthony Bonnah Koomson of the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, Legon, and Mr Cyril Acolatse, formerly of GBC Radio News, who have completed the maximum two terms of three years per term.

Mrs. Afenyi-Dadzie and Mr. Dziekpor, emerged out of four proposed nominees. The other two were Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, Editor of the Daily Graphic and Mr. Yaw Owusu Addo, Director of Radio, GBC.

A statement signed by Mr Bright Blewu, General Secretary of GJA said Nii Nortey Dua of GBC and Mr Kwaku Baako Jr., Editor in Chief of "The Crusading Guide" supervised the nomination process.

The NCC, which is made up of the National Executive, Chairman of Regional Branches and Chapters is the highest decision making body of the GJA after congress and the annual general meeting.

The meeting also decided to set up a nine-member constitutional review committee (CRC) under the Chairmanship of Mr. Berfi Appenteng, Managing Director, Graphic Communications Group Limited to review the Association's constitution.

All six chapters of the Association are to have representative on the CRC. There will be one representative each from the private media and the electronic media.

The Private News Paper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) would nominate that of the private print media. The CRC, which is to be inaugurated on October 8, this year, is expected to begin work immediately and receive memoranda from individual members, branches, chapters and affiliate groups and should submit its draft report by November 10, 2003.

The meeting also agreed that after the re-run of the Association's presidential elections on Friday October 3, the handing over of the new administration should take place on Friday October 10.

It also decided that the GJA General Secretary, Mr. Bright Blewu, take up administration responsibility as Director of Ghana International Press Centre.
