GIMPA, DANIDA empower local government officials

Prof. ManuA workshop to expose participants to effective governance principles has begun at GIMPA.

It is collaboration between the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and it is to build the capacity of local government officials to effectively enhance the decentralisation process at the local level.

The programme is a fellowship course for both private and public officials engaged in local governance and it would broaden the knowledge of the participants on decentralisation and local governance.

This collaboration follows the myriad of problems that have militated against effective decentralisation. Some of these challenges have been lack of leadership skills, procurement procedure, transparency and accountability.

It has attracted participants from Ghana, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya to share knowledge on the best practices through experiences in decentralisation and governance, with the aim of replicating some of the best models in their home countries.

Speaking at a short opening ceremony organised in Accra, the Rector of the GIMPA, Professor Franklyn Manu, underscored the importance of the modules for the two-week programme and urged the participants to contribute meaningfully to the discussions.
