NGO inaugurated to support women, street children

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) set up to support women and street children has been inaugurated at the Rev. Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church in Accra.

Known as "Hope for the Future for Women and Children Foundation", the NGO is aimed at supporting government’s efforts to take children off the streets and provide them with skills training in the area of dress-making, detergents, cosmetics and baking.

Objective

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Mrs Beatrice Naa Kawley Bugre "our goal is to give opportunities to about a thousand mothers to enrol in a career training module that will help them acquire some basic training in some crafts and skills to engage in businesses that will enable them to become financially independent".

She further explained that the vision of the organisation was to become "one of the best foundations to offer support services to empower single mothers to enhance sustainable development.”

Motivation

She again explained that her love for humanitarianism was inspired by an incident she witnessed during her visit to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to seek medical attention for her daughter 10 years ago where some single mothers struggled to pay for drugs prescribed for their sick children.

The Co-founder of the NGO, Mr George Bugre, said the foundation would assist already established NGOs in the country to provide more support for the needy in the country.

Laudable Idea

Launching the foundation, the Superintendent Minister of the Adabraka Methodist Circuit, Very. Rev. Samuel K. Quartey, described the formation of the NGO a laudable idea "which could be said to be a God-driven initiative."

He advised the leaders of the NGO to exhibit integrity and stay true to their core objective, stressing that “with the formation of more NGOs, we want to believe that society is becoming more aware of the needs of people around the globe, especially the vulnerable, the less privileged, and the less endowed".

Support

The Executive Director of the Salt and Light Ministry, Rev. Joyce Aryee, in a speech read on her behalf by Mrs Patrina Quaye, the Administrative Manager of the ministry, called on the general public to support the "Hope for the Future for Women and Children Foundation" to achieve its goals.

"The alarming rate of poverty in our society today, in addition to the undesirable circumstances that surround many individuals, particularly the less privileged and those who suffer from one form of chronic health conditions, require passionate concern by all of us", she added.

The ceremony attracted some members of the clergy and traditional authorities, including the Queen mother of the Adabraka Atukpai Stool, Naa Korkor Aadzieoyi.
