Ghanaian pilgrims pray for peaceful polls

Ghanaian pilgrims visiting Biblical sites in Israel took their concern over the upcoming elections to another level as they prayed for divine intervention in the elections.

The 21 pilgrims gathered every morning, starting from Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, His tomb in Jerusalem and Galilee (now known as Tiberias) to pray for peace as the Electoral Commission (EC) wraps up preparations for the December 7 elections.

Led by the Bishop in charge of the Northern Sector of the Action Chapel International (ACI), Bishop Steve Lartey, the group sang and prayed, invoking divine intervention to defuse the tension and expose any plot or machination aimed at undermining the country’s peace.

“Ghana is our only country and there is no better place to pray and lift our country before the throne of God than here. We want our country to be in one piece, stronger and with leaders to lead its progress,” he urged the congregation.

Crucial elections

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Bishop Lartey said the elections were crucial and it was important that every single Ghanaian prayed for God’s hand in the affairs of the country to ensure not just peace but also the election of leaders after God’s heart.

The spiritual journey to the Holy Land offers the pilgrims the opportunity to trace the footsteps of Jesus Christ from his birthplace to the place of his last breath and other places of Biblical importance.

It was organised by One People Travels, a travel and tour agency, in collaboration with the ACI, Krif Ghana and Ethiopian Airlines.

The trip has taken the pilgrims to the Shepherds Field and the Church of Nativity, the exact spot Jesus was born, both in Bethlehem; the Garden of Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, the Room of the Last Supper, the Stations of the Cross, the Tomb of Christ, the birthplace of Mary, Jesus’ mother, and the Wailing Wall, all in Jerusalem; the Mount of Temptation in Jericho, the River Jordan, where Jesus was baptised, and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth.

Other places the group is expected to visit include the Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount, the place Jesus fed the 5,000 people, Nazareth, the town seen as the hometown of Christ, and Capernaum, where Jesus started his miracles.

The group is also expected to visit Mount Carmel, where Prophet Elijah defeated the Baal prophets in the fire contest, and Caesarea, where an aqueduct was built by King Herod to convey water to the people.
