Tullow Ghana Limited promotes teaching and learning of STEM

The oil exploration and production company, Tullow Ghana Limited, has held a fair to showcase initiatives the company is undertaking to promote the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the country.

The event, dubbed STEM Share Fair, was attended by the company’s STEM project implementers based in Accra and Takoradi who shared with stakeholders some of the programmes, activities and successes the programme had chalked up so far.

Some of the company’s STEM initiatives include the construction of six kindergartens (KG) in six fishing communities in support of early childhood education and  training of STEM teachers.

The KGs are the foundation of the STEM strategy to provide basic hands-on approach to teaching and learning of science.  

Additionally, science clubs have been formed, and after school homework support given to students to improve their pass rate in Mathematics and Science at the BECE.

Also, the programme targets to support 2000 basic schools and 80 science teachers in the Western Region by 2021.

Tullow Ghana and its partners and implementers, including Sabre Education, Youth Bridge Foundation, Africa Science Academy, Right to Dream and Field Ready have been pursuing the STEM initiative since 2016.

The Communications and Investor Relations Manager of Tullow Ghana Ltd, Mrs Dzifa Bampoh, said the maiden STEM Share Fair was based on the company’s belief in collaborative work as a means to achieve success with STEM education.

“To our partners, honouring this invitation reflects our shared dream for STEM education and our collective resolve to bring change and make an impact together.

The end result is to leave a legacy for the country,” she said.

Supporting STEM

The Social Performance Manager of Tullow Ghana Limited, Mr Edmund Fiifi Enchill, said the company had the intention of leaving a positive legacy in the long-term for the people in its operational area, and indeed the country.

In collaboration with Sabre Education, the KG programme has admitted, taught 7,220 children and trained 120 KG teachers and head teachers.
 
Together with Right to Dream Academy and Africa Science Academy, Tullow Ghana is working to provide scholarships to students as well as support brilliant needy girls to study STEM.

Field Ready is also one of the project implementers. It provides internship and assignment opportunities for graduates and prepares them for the job market.
