Techiman SHS assault: Authorities call for calm amid public anxiety

Authorities of the Techiman Senior High School in the Bono East Region have appealed for calm amid public concern over the alleged assault on a 17-year-old student by two teachers of the school.

The appeal comes as the public awaits the outcome of investigations into the incident, which attracted widespread attention following the circulation of a video showing the teachers assaulting the student.

Authorities of the school told the Daily Graphic last Wednesday that a committee constituted by the school had completed its investigations.

Findings and recommendations

It said it had submitted its findings and recommendations to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for consideration and possible action.

The Assistant Headmistress in charge of Administration, Portia Amoah, urged the public to exercise patience while the relevant authorities addressed the matter.

She said investigations were ongoing to ensure that any wrongdoing associated with the incident was appropriately dealt with.

"Yesterday, our regional team was also here to investigate the matter, and I believe the appropriate measures would be taken," she gave an assurance.

Mrs Amoah, who is the Chair of the committee, said the investigations conducted by the school had been forwarded to the GES, pending a final decision.

Providing further details about the incident, Mrs Amoah said accounts given by the teachers involved suggested that their confrontation with the student followed an alleged bullying incident involving three Form Three students and two Form One students.

She explained that the two Form One students, identified as Collins and Michael, had closed from school and were on their way home but were still on the school premises when the incident occurred.

According to her, the three Form Three students called the younger students and demanded money from them.

When the two said they had no money, the older students allegedly took their belts and used the hooks to lash them, leaving them with bruises. They also allegedly subjected them to further physical abuse.

Mrs Amoah said the two younger students later encountered their housemasters, who were the teachers involved in the subsequent confrontation.

"One of them started crying and later narrated the whole story to the housemasters.

They followed up on the matter and a confrontation later ensued, leading to the viral video," she said.

She maintained that the video circulating on social media captured only part of the incident and did not show the events that preceded the confrontation.
