Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam has been re-elected as the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana.
He secured nearly 90 per cent of the votes cast in the elections held during the church’s 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region last Friday.
Rev. Wengam, who is also the Head Pastor of the Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon, polled 3,727 votes, representing 89.61 per cent, to go past Rev. Dr Kwame B. Bansah of the Charity Assemblies of God in the Adentan District in the Accra West Region, who obtained 432 votes, representing 10.39 per cent.
The election returned Rev. Wengam to office for another four-year term and completed the process of electing the church’s top leadership team, with new office holders also elected to the positions of assistant general superintendent, general secretary and general treasurer.
Landslide victory, unopposed
A total of 4,159 valid votes were cast in the contest for general superintendent, with seven ballots rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 4,166.
Rev. Kwadwo Bempah of the Holy Hill Chapel in the Adabraka District in Accra West Region was elected Assistant General Superintendent, while Rev. Dr Albert Anane of the Father’s House in Koforidua in Eastern Region ‘A’ emerged as the new General Secretary.
Rev. Simon Abu Baba of the Central Chapel in Mim in the Asunafo North Municipality in the Ahafo Region retained his position as General Treasurer after standing unopposed.
Departmental elections
Rev. Esther Oduro Dwomo was elected National Women’s Ministries Director, while Silas Amankwaah was retained unopposed as National Men’s Ministry Director.
Other directors who retained their positions unopposed include the National Sunday School Ministry Director, Rev. Michael K. N. Atisu and the National Youth Ministries Director, Rev. Henry Kyei Mensah.
New appointments, directors
The event saw the appointment of new officers. Rev. Boniface Keelson was appointed the new Foreign Missions Director, while Rev. Aaron Lambon Fant, who was adjudged the Best Church Planter at the event, is now the new Home Missions Director.
Acceptance speech
In his acceptance remarks, Rev. Wengam pledged to serve members of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, with renewed commitment, humility and dedication.
“To all who endorsed me with your precious votes, you will never regret your sacred decision,” he said.
Rev. Wengam described the electoral process as peaceful, fair and transparent.
He stated that although elections could create tension, the process had been characterised by minimal acrimony and urged members to move beyond competition and work together for the growth of the church.
“After competition comes cooperation,” Rev. Wengam declared.
“The competition for the highest position in the Assemblies of God, Ghana, is over. A gigantic task to build the church remains,” he added.
Rev. Wengam called on members to put the election behind them, strengthen the bonds of unity and work together in love.
“A local proverb has it that one person cannot embrace a baobab tree,” he recalled, explaining that one person could not carry the task of leading and building the church.
He said the new leadership would need the support of elected and non-elected leaders, pastors, deacons, deaconesses, departmental leaders and members across the country.
Rev. Wengam’s victory marks a significant increase in his electoral support compared with his first election four years ago.
“Four years ago, you gave me 61 per cent. Four years later, you gave me almost 90 per cent,” he said after being declared elected.
Rev. Wengam thanked both those who voted for him and those who supported his opponent, stressing that every participant in the election had played an important role in the church’s democratic process.
“And for those who preferred a different candidate, you deserve my fullest appreciation for being an essential part of the democratic process,” he further observed.
Second-term priorities
He said his second term would focus on advancing the church’s transformation agenda and ensuring that its major strategic initiatives achieved their intended goals.
Among the priorities he highlighted was the Centenary City Project, which is being developed to mark the church’s 100th anniversary.
“The Centenary City Project to mark our 100 years will certainly materialise in our lifetime,” he stressed.
He also reiterated the church’s commitment to evangelism under the MM33 agenda of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, with the goal of reaching communities across Ghana with the Gospel.
Rev. Wengam indicated that the church would also work to strengthen its position and influence by harnessing the talents and human resources within its membership.
“Leadership is about turning bold ideas into shared progress,” he said.
According to him, the Assemblies of God, Ghana, is endowed with significant human resources and would seek to leverage its strengths in worship, biblical teaching, leadership and service to advance the mission of the church.
He acknowledged that challenges remained but expressed confidence that, with God’s help and the collective efforts of the church, they could be turned into opportunities for growth and transformation.
World Assemblies of God Congress
With the 32nd Biennial General Council Meeting coming to an end, Rev. Wengam said attention would now turn to the World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress, scheduled for October 14 to 16, 2026, in Ghana.
The congress, he noted, would be the first of its kind to be hosted in Africa.
He called on pastors and church members across the country to support and participate in the historic event, particularly the evening programmes expected to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“Hosting an event of global significance comes with enormous responsibilities,” he said, adding that the church would rely on God’s grace to fulfil its obligations and present Ghana well on the global stage.
He urged pastors to mobilise their members for the congress and ensure strong participation in the various programmes.
