Quantity surveyors build capacity in contract administration, management

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has trained quantity surveyors to enhance their skills and knowledge in contract administration and management.

The participants were also equipped with the requisite knowledge in management, negotiation and execution of GHA contracts effectively and efficiently.

The exercise formed part of the authority’s initiative to improve the knowledge and skills of quantity surveyors in line with best practice.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the GHA in charge of Maintenance, Mr Christian Nti, who addressed the participants in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, expressed the hope that they would be able to ensure value for money in contracts that they supervised.

He said quantity surveyors who were also cost engineers were required to have the skills to check financial excesses of projects.

According to him, it was important that quantity surveyors were abreast of emerging modern technology in project administration

“We need to train our hardworking quantity surveyors, re-train them and sharpen their skills so that they can deliver quality work", Mr Nti added.

Significance

The Eastern Regional Director of the Koforidua Training Centre (KTC), Dr Charles Afotornu, said the training was timely and important because it would go a long way to improve quality of work in road construction.

“We at KTC train contractors, quantity surveyors, consultants, staff of the Ministry of Roads and Highways in all aspects of project management and how to correctly execute projects, among others,” he said.

The Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Highway Authority, Mr Charles Adebofour, advised the participants to take lessons from the training seriously because whatever they had learnt must be applied on the field.

He said other category of workers were also being trained in other aspects of construction, adding that one of the authority's core values was personnel development.
