Kwaebibirem Municipal Assembly constructing new court buildings

The Kwaebibirem Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has renovated the Kade Community Library and has  converted it into a temporary office for the District Court.

Meanwhile the sod has been cut for the construction of new district and Circuit Court buildings at Kade.

The court buildings are being financed from the assembly’s share of the common fund and are expected to cost about GH¢1million.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony at Kade last Thursday, the Kwaebibirem Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Seth Antwi-Boasiako, said the District Court had been provided with a temporary accommodation in response to the call by the Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo, for metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to provide decent housing for the court else she would have them closed down.

50-year old court

He said the old Kade District Court building was constructed 50 years ago and was currently in a dilapidated state and did not meet the high standards expected.

He said the building lacked adequate office space and hence the decision to build a new one and also meet the Chief Justice’s directive.

“Even though the assembly is tight with money, it nonetheless has to undertake the court projects considering the important role  the justice system plays in society,” he said.

Quality work

Mr Antwi-Boasiako urged the contractor working on the projects to not only produce quality work, but to endeavour to complete them within the contract period of nine months.

The Supervising High Court Judge in Koforidua, Ms Gifty Dechem, commended the Kwaebibirem Municipal Assembly for its decision to put up new and permanent buildings for the Kade District and Circuit courts.

She said her outfit was ready to assist the assembly to get the projects completed on time.

The Kadehene, Osabarima Agyare Tenadu, also complimented the MCE and the assembly for the decision to put up new court buildings to replace the old and dilapidated ones.

He advised the people, particularly the youth, to lead responsible lives in order for the crime rate in the area to reduce.

Osabarima Tenadu also urged kingmakers in the municipality to be steadfast and ensure that chieftaincy disputes were done away with.
