The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has partnered AAK Marriage Foundation to train marriage counsellors on contemporary approaches to counselling to help promote stable and healthy marriages in the municipality.
The one-day workshop, held at the Wesley Grammar School Conference Hall in Accra, was attended by marriage counsellors, religious leaders and other stakeholders.
It was on the theme: “Get married right – For all people…Everywhere”.
New skills
The participants were equipped with practical counselling skills and knowledge of the legal and social dimensions of marriage to enable them to offer appropriate guidance to couples and individuals preparing to marry.
Topics covered included pre-marital counselling, effective communication between spouses, conflict management, marriage registration procedures at the assembly, and the rights and responsibilities of married couples.
A facilitator from the AAK Marriage Foundation, Albert Ampofo Krampah, said strengthening the capacity of counsellors was important in helping families deal with challenges that could result in marital conflicts, domestic violence and family breakdown.
Legal protection
He urged couples to ensure that their marriages were officially registered to secure legal recognition and protection for themselves and their children.
Mr Krampah said proper registration was particularly important in protecting the rights of women and children in family-related matters.

The Director of Social Welfare and Community Development at the assembly, Godfrey Saim Jnr, commended the organisers and participants for their commitment to promoting strong families and responsible marriages.
He said the assembly would continue to collaborate with relevant organisations to support initiatives that promoted family welfare and social development in the municipality.
Appreciation
The participants expressed appreciation to the assembly and the Foundation for the training and pledged to share the knowledge and skills acquired with members of their churches, mosques and communities.
