Ghana congratulates US on 250th Independence Anniversary, celebrates decades of partnership

President John Dramani Mahama has sent a congratulatory message to United States President Donald J. Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a press release issued on July 5, 2026, that President Mahama conveyed the message on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, a day after the United States marked its Independence Day on July 4.

The ministry said President Mahama described the occasion as "auspicious" and referred to the longstanding relations between Ghana and the United States, which date back to Ghana's independence in 1957.

According to the ministry, the United States sent an official delegation to Ghana's independence celebrations in 1957. The delegation was led by then Vice-President Richard Nixon and included Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Bunche. The United States also became one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Ghana that year.

The ministry said the relationship has grown steadily over nearly seven decades. It cited the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), projects under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as examples of the long-standing partnership. It added that trade, investment and cooperation in the social sector have also expanded over the years.

The statement also referred to a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries. It noted that former US Presidents Bill Clinton visited Ghana in 1998, George W. Bush in 2008 and Barack Obama in 2009.

On Ghana's side, former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as well as President Mahama, have all undertaken official and working visits to the United States.

The ministry also referred to the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries, saying educational and cultural exchange programmes have promoted mutual understanding over the years.

In his letter to President Trump, President Mahama expressed confidence that relations between Ghana and the United States would continue to be guided by shared values, including the rule of law, human rights, democracy and economic prosperity, which he described as the foundation of the close and enduring partnership between the two countries.

President Mahama ended his message by wishing the Government and people of the United States a peaceful and successful celebration of their 250th Independence Anniversary.
