Finance Ministry gives approval to GIS for recruitment of personnel

The Ministry of Finance has given approval for the recruitment of 500 personnel into the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, has disclosed.

Rationale

The minister explained that the recruitment exercise was to augment the staff strength of GIS in the provision of peace and security through the enforcement of immigration laws at the country's borders.

Mr Dery, who was addressing personnel of the GIS as part of his two day tour of the Central Region last Tuesday, noted that the GIS was critical in the security architecture of the country, particularly when the world was engulfed in terrorism and other transnational border crimes.

He said the role of the GIS in the country was even more crucial in carrying out an open-border policy in fulfilment of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) Protocol and free movement to enhance businesses among sister countries.

Advice

The minister admonished personnel to be friendly but firm, adding that they were the first line of contact in creating positive impressions about the country, "at the same time, ensuring the full application of the immigration laws to the latter."

According to him, the government was committed to building capacity in the area of crime detection and other specialised areas.

He commended the GIS for the fight against human traffic and smuggling.

Appeal

The GIS Staff Officer at the Central Regional Command, Assistant Superintendent Samuel Bediako-Poku, appealed to the minister to supply the region with speed boats to assist the Navy to combat crime on the sea.

Prisons

The minister also visited the Ankaful Maximum Prison where he gave an assurance that all persons due for promotion would be duly upgraded while those in acting capacities would be made permanent heads.

He said the repair works would also be done on a biogas facility at the prisons while drugs would be supplied
