FDA urges arrest of Adomfe 'water sellers', says water has no medicinal value
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has called for the arrest of persons selling Adomfe water under the claims that the water can treat ailments such as stroke and infertility.

It said that water from Adomfe did not have any medicinal values as was being speculated.
It has, therefore, cautioned the general public against the patronage of the Adomfe water, since it could not guarantee its safety, quality and efficacy.
“It must be noted that the product, ADOMFE WATER, is ordinary water with no therapeutic properties and, therefore, the claims being made are deceptive,” a statement signed by FDA’s Chief Executive, Mr Hudu Mogtari, said.

The Daily Graphic in February, this year, published a story in which hundreds of people were said to be trooping to Adomfe, a small town in the Asante Akyem South District in the Ashanti Region, to fetch water from a borehole which is believed to heal all manner of illnesses.
One gallon (popularly called Kufuor gallon) of the borehole water is sold for GH¢10 to visitors and GH¢1 to residents.
FDA reacts
According to the FDA, its investigations have revealed that the product was sold in vehicles and at market centres with claims that it could be used for the treatment of various diseases, including stroke and infertility.
It warned distributors of the water that it was a criminal offence to offer products that had not been approved by the FDA for sale.
“Schedule Five of the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851) does not allow any food product, which includes water, to be sold as a medicinal product under any circumstance,” it stated.
Seizure
The statement also said the FDA had seized a quantity of the unregistered water in the Brong Ahafo Region.
It assured the general public of its readiness to ensure public health and safety at all times and appealed for any information on persons suspected to be selling the water through telephone numbers 0244337235, 0244337251, 0542736948 or 0208078281.
