Farmer to die by hanging for killing student

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced a 57-year-old farmer to death by hanging after he had been found guilty of murdering a 22-year-old student who was having an amorous relationship with his stepdaughter.

The convict, Nicholas Kwabena Anane, who doubled as a drinking bar operator in Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, shot and killed Desmond Asihene, who was an SHS Three student of the Dadease Agric Senior High School, near Kumawu, on April 25, 2011, after he had accused the student of theft.

Prosecuting, a State Attorney, Mr Emmanuel Lawrence Otoo-Boison, had told the court that when Anane realised that Asihene had fallen in deep love with his stepdaughter, a student of the Tweneboah Kodua Senior High School, he and his wife, identified as Afua Asantewa, threatened to kill Asihene if he maintained the amorous relationship.

He said the relationship between Asihene and Anane’s stepdaughter started in November 2010 but it took some time before the convict and his wife became aware of it.

According to Mr Otoo-Boison, as soon Anane became aware of the affair, he and his wife informed Asihene’s mother to warn her son to stay away from his stepdaughter.

He said it was at that time that Anane threatened to kill Asihene if he dared disobeyed his warning.

He said around 11 p.m. on April 24, 2011, the step-daughter went to sleep in Asihene’s house, instead of sleeping in her family house.

When Asihene went to see his lover off around 1 a.m. the following day, Anane saw them and, armed with a pistol, he chased the student into an uncompleted building where he shot him in the chest.

He said as soon as the incident occurred,  Anane and his wife rushed to the Kumawu Police Station and lodged a complaint that he (Anane) had shot a thief who had come to his house to rob him.

Mr Otoo-Boison said police investigations revealed that Anane was rather throwing dust into their eyes and, therefore, arrested him.

He said as part of the investigations, the police retrieved a pistol and 410 live cartridges from Anane.

During a post-mortem examination, a pathologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital removed 28 pellets from the left breast of the deceased, an indication that the muzzle of the pistol had been placed on the chest of the student before the gun was fired.

Such evidence, Mr Otoo-Boison said, was an indication that Anane had deliberately shot and killed the 22–year-old student at close range.
