He was over the weekend arraigned at the District Utility Court and charged with stealing and interfering with the power distribution system.

Albert Mensah, who is currently in police custody, pleaded guilty to the charges but the presiding judge, Dr Worlanyo Kotoku, has deferred sentencing to Saturday, December 19, 2015.

Briefing the court, the Manager in charge of Prosecutions at the ECG, Mr Paul Assibi Abariga, said on October 19, 2015, a team from the ECG were on their usual monitoring duties at Mamprobi and they went to a house where five ECG prepaid meters had been installed.

Suspicious

Upon the inspection of the meters, the team detected that it had a credit of GH¢494.92 on it, which made the team suspicious. They called the Korle Bu office of the ECG to check on the purchase trend of the customer.

Mr Abariga said it was detected that there was no such purchasing record on the account.

When the customer was questioned as to who loaded the credit on the meter, he mentioned the name of the accused as the one who loaded GH¢500 worth of credit for him in appreciation of a kind service he had rendered to him.

On hearing that the deal had been uncovered, the accused secretly went to the house and cleared all the credits from the meter.

He was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police.
