Communities in Volta Region get electricity

About 3,000 inhabitants of several communities in the Volta Region have been connected to the electricity grid in a scheme that was begun by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in January this year.

The beneficiary communities, which include Tanyigbe, Leklebi Dafor, Liati Agbonyra, Fodome, Sokode Etoe, Akoefe, Akrofu, Green Valley, Kukurantumi and Ananikope, have been served with low voltage (LV) lines and transformers equipped with capacities to accommodate the demands of the population.

System Improvement Project

The expansion project is part of the ECG’s “System Improvement Project (SIP)”, which involves the replacement of sub-standard conductors, wooden poles that are rotten, as well as increasing the capacity of transformers that are overloaded.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Volta Regional Engineer of the ECG, Mr Bernard Tetteh, said the SIP had the objective of minimising losses to the company, reinforcing network structures and providing safe, reliable and top-quality electricity to consumers.
He added that in addition to providing power to all underserved and developing communities in the region, the ECG was undertaking the exercise to increase its revenue.

“Because we are aware of the transformational change that access to electricity brings to individuals and communities, we never shirk our responsibility of ensuring that power is available to every potential customer,” he said.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of the ECG in the Volta Region, Mr Joseph Mensah Forson, expressed his satisfaction with the high level of cooperation the company had received from the people in the region but urged them to not wait till they received threats of disconnection of services before they rushed to pay their bills.

A week long exercise to collect debts owed the company by institutions under a package dubbed‘Special Load Tariff (SLT)’ yielded GH¢205, 000.
