City authorities give some major roads facelift

Some portions of major roads in Accra are beginning to see a facelift in terms of sanitation.

A lot of these roads which were in insanitary conditions are now being catered for, while others remain in the same condition.

This comes in the wake of sanitation activities being undertaken by local authorities, including fumigation and weeding as part of measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease.

For weeks now, The Mirror has observed that weeds on some portions of the median from Adenta through to Madina-Atomic junction are being cleared, while cleaners are spotted almost every morning sweeping along these roads.

The medians on the Awoshie-Pokuase Highway, 37 to Madina and the Graphic Road are also receiving similar attention.

The N4 highway, specifically the Legon-Pantang stretch where heaps of rubbish and dirt used to be a regular sight, is being attended to.

Other bad sights
The Madina Zongo Junction-Ritz Junction portion, being the main market area, no longer has a lot of rubbish on the stretch, compared to how it used to be a few months ago.

From Madina Firestone, except for overgrown weeds in the median on the overhead all through to the UPSA junction and beyond, there is usually some litter.

At the time of filing this report, the Madina Atomic Junction roundabout had been cleared of its weeds while refuse had been gathered in sacks at a vantage point awaiting collection.

Litter bins at vantage points on the highway had also been emptied, making the sidewalk cleaner than before.

However, on the West and North Legon roads and environs, litter bins provided by the Ministry of Sanitation are full, creating offensive odour around.

Activities of hawkers
Hawkers also continue to have a field day as packets of empty sachets are usually spotted sandwiched in between weeds.
