Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs to resolve disputes

Twelve chieftaincy  cases, including petitions and appeals out of a total of 53 disputes pending before the judicial committee of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, had been disposed of within the last few months.

However, within the same period, the number of petitions and appeals that had been filed again at the committee was almost equal the number of those that had been recently settled by the house.

Some of the disposed cases include, the Berekum Omanhene petition, Wenchi, Subriso, Banda Boase, Kokoma Queen mother and the Nkoranza Benkum petitions.

The President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Pemampem Yaw Kagbrese V, who disclosed this in Sunyani, described the situation as a ‘’canker’’ which had become worrisome to members of the house.

Addressing the end-of-year general meeting of the house, Pemampem Kagbrese, who is also the Omanhene of the Yeji Traditional Area, expressed regret that the region had in the past few years, been plagued with perennial chieftaincy disputes.

That, he said, was a threat not only to the regional and national security but also sought to undermine the integrity and authority of the chieftaincy institution, which also did not augur well for its development and sustenance.

The President of the house emphasised: ‘‘This house is making strenuous efforts to settle the numerous chieftaincy cases that are pending before the judicial committee. It is rather sad to note that, this region has in the past few years been plagued with perennial chieftaincy conflicts.

‘‘It appears the chieftaincy institution is under siege and unless we respond positively and timely to this phenomenon, we shall soon be confronted with a situation where some of our subjects will take the law into their own hands and break the peace and harmony that is a characteristic of this region.”

He reminded the regional cordinating council that the office block of the house was still not completed in spite of the numerous appeals made to the various authorities, including the late President Prof. J.E.A. Mills.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, used the occasion to inform the house about the numerous development projects and social interventions that the government had undertaken since it assumed office.

He indicated that in collaboration with Rlg,the government had rolled out a programme to supply 60,000 computers to public schools, and that, so far, 8, 385 laptops, computers and accessories had been supplied to over 245 public and private schools in the region.
