AMA to evict tenants from dilapidated building

Tenants in a four-storey building at Osu are to be ejected after attempts to convince them to vacate the dilapidated structure have proved futile.

Some of the tenants still reside in the building, in spite of many notices from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) asking them to vacate the building, as it is not structurally sound for habitation and likely to collapse.

When the Daily Graphic visited the building, the tenants were going about their businesses unperturbed about the notices from the AMA or the danger that the building posed to their lives.

Avoiding catastrophe

However, according to a civil engineer of the AMA, Mr Felix Tetteh, the assembly would not allow such a situation to continue and would, therefore, take the necessary action to protect the lives of the tenants in order to avoid any catastrophe.

“Per the notices that we have posted on the building, nobody is supposed to reside in it. We will, therefore, in accordance with the law, evict the remaining tenants and eventually demolish the structure,” he said.

He, however, failed to say when the assembly would evict the tenants or the building would be demolished. He stated that the AMA would meet with the owner of the structure in the course of the week before moving forward with the eviction and the demolition exercises.

No money
Some of the tenants who spoke with the Daily Graphic claimed that their failure to move out of the building was as a result of their inability to raise money to secure accommodation elsewhere.

“As I speak to you, I don’t have any money to rent another place. If the AMA wants to demolish the building, then the landlord must return our money to us,” one tenant said.
