has launched its 50th anniversary with the erection of a security post and the fitting of a gate for the school.

The project, which cost GH¢₵20,000, was financed by members of the year group in line with their decision to give the school a facelift prior to the actual celebration of its anniversary.

The President of the group, Mr Vincent Malm, told the Daily Graphic that going forward, if the project needs of the school were identified and properly costed, the group would do its best to help.

High discipline

Drawing on memories from their days in school, Mr Malm said during their years, the level of discipline was high but the present generation saw discipline as their parents or adults being too hard on them.

As a solution, Mr Malm suggested nationwide mentoring processes where people who completed school would not turn their back on the schools but would mentor succeeding generations.

“Somehow, we also felt in our days that our tutors and elders were being unduly hard on us but later on when we left the school and mixed up with others, we appreciated that the discipline had really shaped us into responsible people,” he said.

Academic downfall arrested

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Kate Bannerman, said the academic performance of the school had gone down considerably over the years but when she took over, she brought the various stakeholders together and they had succeeded in turning around the fortunes of the school.

The priority project for the school now, she said, was the expansion of the assembly hall to contain the current student population of 2,000.

She said the hall could currently take only 500 students.

Prudent administration

For her part, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ms Sherry Ayittey, who is a member of the 1965-67 year group, commended the school’s administration for doing well to contain the high number of students, as she recounted that during their days in school, their number was not high.

“There has been an appreciable level of the culture of maintenance and we should commend the school administration for a job well done,” she said.

She also said much had been achieved in terms of good management of the school and added that in terms of discipline, there were some open opportunities for the Ghana Education Service (GES) to step things up.
