Obomeng Traditional Council honours 60 teachers

The Kwahu Obomeng Traditional Council in the Eastern Region has honoured 60 teachers in the area for their contribution to improvement in educational standards in the area.

The ceremony, which was jointly organised by Kwahu Obomeng citizens in Accra and Tema, saw the teachers presented with parcels, with the overall best, Madam Regina Serwah, taking home a deep freezer.

Legacy

In an address, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Mr Seth Kwame Acheampong, said the only legacy parents could bequeath to their children was to invest in their education.

He said education held the key to poverty alleviation and, therefore, parents should take the education of their children seriously by constantly monitoring their performance in school.

Mr Acheampong said the government would continue to lay a solid foundation for the educational sector in order to produce well-educated citizens who would contribute their quota to the speedy development of the country.

He commended the Chief of Kwahu Obomeng, Nana Effah Opinamang III, for instituting the awards scheme and expressed the hope that it would encourage teachers in the area to work harder.

Funeral cloth

A private businessman, Nana Kwasi Abankwah, who was the guest of honour, advised parents to stop wasting their scarce resources on expensive funeral cloths at the expense of their children's education.

While appealing to teachers not to take advantage of their female students to sexually harass them, he commended citizens of the area for their continued support to the development of Kwahu Obomeng.

He was of the view that for the free senior high school policy to succeed, teachers, who were pivotal to the development of the country, must be supported to offer their best.

Vision of council

Nana Opinamang said the awards, which were the first of their kind, would be replicated in the coming years.

He said it was the vision of the traditional council to improve the standard of education in the area.

The Vice-President of the Association of Kwahu Obomeng Citizens in Accra and Tema, Mr Kwaku Asirifi, said the group had launched a five-year development fund and called on all citizens of the area, both home and abroad, to contribute their quota to the fund.
