The School of Technology and Social Sciences (STSS) of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has admitted 80 students to pursue various programmes in its Department of Economics and Applied Mathematics.
The students would undertake courses such as the Master of Science (MSc) in Financial Economics, Energy and Economic Policy.
Addressing the fresh students at a brief orientation ceremony in Accra, the Head of Department (HOD), Gamel Abdul-Nasser Salifu, who spoke on behalf of the Dean of the school, Prof. Emmanuel Adabor, said the school offered programmes designed to deepen understanding of the economy and how markets operated, thereby contributing significantly to economic development.
He also stated that students who graduated from the school would not only gain skills to navigate the complex global economy but also be equipped with analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills to thrive in the field.
“The world is going through a major transition.
Learning these courses will help you better shape your future. You will develop your portfolio and research skills,” he said.
Dr Salifu also congratulated the new students on their admission to the school and assured them that its world-class faculty would provide them with a rewarding learning experience in their respective programmes of study.
A Senior Assistant Registrar of the Students’ Affairs Directorate of the university, Kwabena Amoah, who briefed the freshmen on the various procedures for registration, encouraged them to pay their tuition fees in full to enable them to access the registration portal and added that they must complete the necessary registration on time.
“Students who go through the academic year without registration cannot sit their final examination and would not be identified in the school’s system. Make sure you register immediately the registration cycle opens,” he urged.
On access to library resources for research and electronic learning materials, the university’s librarian, Kojo Antwi, said students were required to register with the library to obtain credentials to access the resources.
He also cautioned the students against plagiarism, noting that the university used plagiarism-detection software to check students’ work for originality.
Mr Antwi, therefore, encouraged them to avoid plagiarism by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly to enhance their original works.
Messages
In his remarks, a Senior Professor of the STSS, Prof. Wisdom Akpalu, said the school would transform them and inspire them to go after their dreams.
“You will be taking on some core courses such as micro and macroeconomics, among others.
The journey will not be easy, but you will be happy at the end of the day after you have graduated,” he said.
For his part, a Senior Professor at STSS, Prof. Kwame Adamu, urged the students not to be afraid, saying their success depended on their grasp of algebraic expressions and the amount of time they devoted to their studies.
