AUCC honours Sam Jonah

Sir Sam JonahThe African University College of Communications (AUCC) School of Business has been named after the Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital Limited, Sir Samuel Esson Jonah.

The naming of the school as the Sam E. Jonah School of Business is intended to raise the image of the school to an enviable height in the field of academia as it is associated with an international business icon.

Speaking at the launching ceremony in Accra, the founder and Executive Chairman of AUCC, Mr Kojo Yankah, explained that the university was inspired and gratified to have nominated Sir Jonah who is making the country proud in the business world.

Sir Sam E. Jonah is one of Africa’s most prominent and influential businessmen who spearheaded the development of successful companies including Ashanti Godlfields and AngloGold Ashanti Limited.

He is a recipient of a three Lifetime Achievement awards and conferred with others, including one of the World Top 25 Most Influential business people by CNN and Time Magazine in December 2004.

In 2003, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, conferred on him honorary Knighthood as Knight Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and in 2006, was awarded Ghana’s highest national award, the Companion of the Order of the Star.

He is also the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

Mr Yankah stated that with Sir Jonah’s rich experience in business, the students of the AUCC School of Business would be impacted with his rich experience and knowledge.

He explained that education should build the capacity and creativity of students and develop their entrepreneurial and moral leadership skills, stressing that  values were found in Sir Sam Jonah.

 The Chairman of the Governing Council of the AUCC, Professor S.K.B Asante, expressed the hope that with joint efforts and Sir Jonah’s extensive international exposure, the image of the university would be raised to high levels in the world of business, research and training.

Sir Sam Jonah expressed gratitude for the honour done him and expressed his commitment to work to uplift the image of the university.

“The graduates must embody certain values such as compassion, integrity, ethical and moral values and have a clear vision for the department and draw agenda for short and long-term plans,” he said.
