Anomabo Fisheries College to be operational for 2020/2021 academic year
Efforts are underway to ensure that critical components of Anomabo Fisheries College, started in 2011 are completed for the operationalisation of the College during the 2020/2021 academic year.
This is part of the government’s vision to build a robust fishing and Aquaculture industry that thrives on infrastructure including landing sites, hatcheries, fish health laboratories and training centers.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) is collaborating with implementing partners including the University of Cape Coast and Mfantseman Municipal Assembly to ensure that this happens in the 2020/2021 academic year.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs Elizabeth Afoley Quaye who made this known at a press briefing in Accra Wednesday, September 30, 2020 was very optimistic that the first batch of intake into the College in the next academic year was non-negotiable.
She also took time to take journalists through other infrastructural projects her ministry has been up to.
She indicated, “Anomabo Fisheries College (93% completed), Aquaculture Centre and Commercial Farm Project (preparatory activities ongoing), Ice Making and Refrigeration Facilities (two installed and third yet to be cleared from the port), Rehabilitation of public hatcheries (3 out of 6 are completed)”
“Four (4) hatcheries at Ashaiman, Konan, Vea and Akosombo have been rehabilitated. Currently, three (3) namely Ashaiman, Konan and Akosombo are in operation. The Vea hatchery is yet to be operational. Two additional public hatcheries at Sefwi Wiawso and Dormaa Ahenkro are being rehabilitated. These hatcheries will support the implementation of the Aquaculture For Jobs programme.”
The Ministry is currently collaborating with Ministry of Transport which is leading in the construction of Landing sites.
It will be recalled that President Akufo-Addo in 2019 cut sod at Axim and Moree for the commencement of the phase I component of the project.
MoFAD with the support of the government of South Korea through the Korean Overseas Cooperation had provided three Ice Plants and Cold Storage Facilities.
The facilities are expected to help reduce fish post-harvest losses in the beneficiary communities.
The Ministry has also appointed new managers to operationalize the existing six (6) Ice Plants and Cold Storage Facilities located at Prampram, Nyanyano, Kromantsen, Shama, New Takoradi and Half Assini. The operations will create job and reduce post-harvest loss”, she added.
