He said education, particularly higher education, still remained the most effective weapon against poverty, discrimination and ignorance.

Speaking at a matriculation ceremony for 9,529 students of the university’s College of Distance Education (CoDE) in the Southern Zone, in Cape Coast last Saturday, Prof. Kuupole specifically asked women to take advantage of the university’s distance education programme to acquire higher education to better the lives of their families and communities.

Commendation

He said it was commendable that many more women were taking advantage of the programme and gradually bridging the gender gap.

He noted that the introduction of the distance education had over the years improved the lives of the beneficiaries, and gave an assurance that the university would work continuously to make higher education accessible to many more Ghanaians.

He said out of the 18,830 students admitted to the distance education programmes nationwide this year, 8,205 were females, stressing that higher education was crucial, especially for women to be economically empowered, adding that “with the acquisition of higher education, your rights would not be trampled upon”.

He advised the women to make an impact in their communities and encourage many more women to seek higher education.

Expansion of policies
Prof. Kuupole said the College of Distance Education was executing transformation and expansion policies to enhance distance learning.

He indicated that the college managed to open new study centres in Tema, Kasoa, Accra, Drobo, Nkoranza, Sefwi Dadieso, and Manso Abore while enrolment in the already existing centres also increased, adding that new study centres were also being constructed.

He said the university had also worked to put in place a policy to ensure that students of the college on the various distance education programmes could progress to specialise in their areas of study.

Excellence
Prof. Kuupole said the distance education programme of the university was aimed at attaining excellence through quality teaching and learning, indicating that the College of Distance Education had made strides by incorporating modern technology in the delivery of distance education.

“We are happy to announce that over 20 modules have been reviewed and now digitised,” adding that students would soon be able to access modules on their iPads.

He advised the fresh students to work hard to achieve what they had set out for themselves,
