In an interview, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Fitzgerald, Mrs Edna Ajigiwe Akohene, said the event was aimed at creating experiences of the Gold Coast through modern Ghana.

Mrs Akohene explained that the uniqueness of this event was that it was family centred.

“We want to create an environment where people can bond with their parents, grandparents, families and friends.

“The extended family system is dying so we want to ignite that sense of belonging as it was prevalent in the past.”

According to her, the ticketed event which will take off at 10.30p.m. to 8p.m. will have on display over 100 local dishes and snacks from all the 16 regions of Ghana.

“We want our guests to have a taste of our own indigenous foods, drinks and snacks from all the regions.”

There will be a segment for families, friends and loved ones to participate in games such as pilolo, ampe, oware, charleskele, among others.

“These days, you hardly see our young girls and boys playing old games some of us used to play like pilolo. They are all glued to the television, phones and computer games. Can you imagine seeing your mother competing in ampe on that day? It’s all going to be refreshing to see adults reliving such games with their children/wards,” she said.

Mrs Akohene indicated that there would be a fashion show by some Ghanaian designers to showcase made in Ghana wear, accessories, shoes, bags, cosmetics, among others.

“There will also be a folktale time with veteran actress Maame Dorkono who will bring back to our guests ‘By the Fire Side’ which was very popular on national television and taught us a lot of moral lessons through Ananse’s stories.”

For music lovers, she mentioned that there would be live band performances by the Kwampa Band, Wulomei Band and other cultural troupes which would be putting up some rich cultural performances.

“Besides the food, music and dance will be live art display, sculpturing, pottery making and beading. There will be cultural dancers who will be teaching people how to do some of our traditional dances such as adowa and many more,” she hinted.

Mrs Akokene said the tickets could be purchased at the entrance at GH¢350 for adults and GH¢150 for children. However, there will be an early bird discount for those who purchase their tickets much earlier.

Interestingly, she said the medium of exchange on that day will be the cowries that were used to buy things in the Gold Coast before the introduction of currencies.

“Once you pay for your tickets, you will be given some cowries to enable you to use in buying your food, drinks etc.”
