Size matters

In our previous discussion we saw how the proportions of an element or item impact the overall décor in any given space.

Closely related to the pleasantness of proportions is another very important principle of design, scale.

Scale happens to be the relation of the size of one object to the size of another. In décor, it is the relation of the sizes of the objects in a room to each other and to the size of the room itself.

It includes considering the scale of accessories in relation to the pieces with which they are used. For example, a reading lamp on a corner table or a decorative accessory on a coffee table or even a throw pillow on a sofa.

The eyes move smoothly from one object to another, capturing every important piece or item of décor when we choose or arrange things well related in scale to each other and to the room.

Such size and scale related arrangements create a feeling of unity and harmony in a given space.

Similarly, if some items are too large in scale, the eye is carried away abruptly from the objects of smaller scale, so that some pieces that should be noticed are unnoticed.

Applying scale in décor schemes

To have a pleasant impact on décor the principle of scale may be applied in several ways including the following:

• Furniture pieces grouped together should be alike in scale. This means that not only their size, but also their “visual weight” should be compatible. The visual weight of an item is how heavy or light that item appears to be.

For example, two chairs may be about the same size, but one may appear light and airy and the other heavy and bulky.

The airy or lighter one should not be used with bulky pieces or the heavy one with airy pieces. Rather, choose pieces that are similar in scale and weight for a grouping.

• Various groupings throughout a room should be similar in scale, too, to create a feeling of harmony and unity.

• Sometimes a decorator/designer can deliberately ignore the principle of scale and or rather use the knowledge of scale to create a special effect.

Perhaps a deliberate note of drama is needed to spice up a dull setting.

One practical successful way of achieving drama is to include a piece that is oversized in scale compared with the other objects in the room.

For example, a very large or over-scaled accessory can add a dramatic touch to the décor.

Having established these possibilities just like with other principles of design, one must develop an eye for good scale before you can deliberately distort scale.

Next week we will look at some other interesting principles of design, particularly the principle that makes any decorated space attractive.

Stay blessed and enjoy your weekend.
