Teach children about women’s historical contributions

Panellists have called on schools to design a curriculum that incorporates the contributions of women in history to serve as references for students in their studies.

According to them, a lot of schools’ curricula focus on a few women such as Yaa Asantewaa, the great warrior, leaving the rest who made great sacrifices towards Ghana’s history out of the limelight.

The panellists made the call during the launch of a book titled Black and Bold Queens: Women in history in Accra.

The book, written by Dr Nikitta Dede Adjirakor provides detailed information about the contributions of 16 great women towards Ghana’s history such as Yaa Asantewaa, a warrior, Ama Ata Aidoo, a writer, Efua Theodora Sutherland, a playwright and Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey, a business woman.

They were of the view that when children were able to easily access proper documentation of women in history, they would have a wide variety of women sources to aid them in their studies and research work.

“This would go a long way not only to make information about women easily accessible but also promote inclusivity and gender equality as well as give youngsters relevant sources to inspire them to go after their dreams and aspirations,” they advocated.

They also urged content creators such as writers, film-makers and poets to collaborate to document information about women in videos, books, audio visuals and poems to target different audiences including children and the aged across the country.

According to Dr Adjirakor, the book will add to the scarce literature about women from different geographic locations who have made significant impact in different careers and interests in the past and yet their stories had not been documented.

Additionally, she noted that the aim of the book was for children to easily access information of great women in history that might not be found in their school’s curriculum.

Two students of the Happy Kids School, Erica Amoah and Nyameye Kwesi Oware, said they were motivated to start writing down information about themselves and their families into a book so that they could pass them on to the future generation.
