T.I Ahamadiyya SHS wins Wa Central sports festival

T.I Ahamadiyya Senior Senior High School (SHS) emerged the overall champions of the annual Wa Central Inter-Zonal Second Cycle Schools Sports and Games Festival held in Wa.

T.I Ahmadiyya picked18 trophies in the Boys Division and 15 others in the Girls Division to win the contest.

The five SHSs which competed in soccer, volleyball, handball, cross-country race, basketball, table tennis, netball, athletics and badminton were Jamiat Islamic, T.I Ahmadiyya, Wa SHS, Wa Senior High Technical School (SHTS) and Saint Francis Xavier Minor Seminary.

Wa SHS placed second with12 trophies in the Boys Division and 10 trophies in the Girls Category. They were followed by Wa SHTS, Jamiat Islamic and Saint Francis Xavier respectively. The Best Behaved School Award went to Saint Francis Xavier while Miss Balija Hafuo of the Islamic SHS won the cross country, 800 metres and 1,500 metres race in the Girls Division. She also emerged as the Best Girls’ Athlete.

Others are Master Anas Aremeyaw of Wa SHTS who excelled in the cross country, 1,500 metres and 800 metres race and was adjudged the Best Athlete while Moomin Farahar Froko from Wa SHTS was crowned the Best Soccer Player.

In the final of the boys’ soccer, Wa SHS beat the favourites of the tournament, Wa SHTS 1-0 to emerge as champions. It was a sweet revenge for the Wa SHS as they lost by the same margin to Wa SHTS in the opening game. In the Girls Division, Wa SHS defeated Jamiat Islamic Girls 4-3 on penalties after a goalless game within regulation time.

Addressing the participating schools at the end of the competition, the Wa Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Hajia Abu Afusata, stressed the need for discipline in sports and also charged the selected participants to train hard for the forthcoming regional super zonal schools sports festival (June 1 to 8) at Jirapa. The six zonal teams, she mentioned, were the Wa Central, Wa West, Nadowli, Jirapa, Lawra and Tumu zones.

The Chairman of the Wa Central Sports Zone, Mr Tampuori Darimani, who chaired the festival, commended the students, officials and the general public for their high sense of discipline and commitment during the games.
