Falsyd Foundation School has finally achieved its long-cherished dream of winning the National Junior Graphic Fan Club Spelling Competition by beating three other schools to take the coveted prize.

The school bagged 41 points to win the contest, held at the Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall at Teshie-Nungua in Accra.

Kabore Basic School Junior Graphic Fan Club, Ho, which has won the competition twice, came second with 33 points, while the 2015 spelling champions, the University Primary School, Cape Coast, placed third with 32 points, with the Christian Vertical Centre, Tema, coming fourth with 31 points.

The fifth and six positions were taken by the Nest School, Takoradi, and St Paul’s Methodist School, Wa, respectively.

Before the contest began, contestants of the Falsyd Foundation had vowed not to allow the University Primary School to take the cup for the second time.

The Falsyd contestants said they had prepared well enough to take on any school they would face and, indeed, they did not go back on their word, as they led the reigning champions by eight good points at the end of proceedings, making them the first school from Accra to win the contest since its inception four years ago.

At the end of the competition, the reigning champions tied with the Christian Vertical Centre and so the two schools had to answer questions to break the tie.

After going through the first round of words, the tie had still not been broken, since both schools could not spell the words given them, necessitating another round of words.

Finally, the University Primary School was able to spell a bonus word after the Christian Vertical Centre had failed to spell the word A-R-B-O-R-E-A-L correctly.

In a chat, the patron of the University Primary School, Mr Francis Grant, said although Lord Awingur Mba, who had led  the Cape Coast team to victory in the 2015 competition was away, the current team members were ‘crackers’ who were going to break the foundation of the Falsyd Foundation School.

Unfortunately for the defending champions, its team was not strong enough to ‘crack’ the foundation of the winning school which presented a formidable squad.

For placing first, each contestant of Falsyd Foundation (last year’s runner-up) had an Ecobank Junior Saver Account, a tablet, an Oxford dictionary, a certificate of participation and Junior Graphic souvenirs. The school was presented with two white boards for training brilliant spellers for the contest.

For placing second, each contestant of the Kabore School Complex had an Ecobank Junior Saver Account, a suitcase, an Oxford dictionary, a certificate of participation, Junior Graphic souvenirs, as well as a white board for the school.

Contestants of the University Primary School each had an Ecobank Junior Saver Account, a suitcase, an Oxford dictionary, a certificate of participation, Junior Graphic souvenirs and a white board for the school for taking the third position.

Each contestant of the Christian Vertical School had an Ecobank Junior Saver Account, a suitcase, an Oxford Dictionary, a certificate of participation and Junior Graphic souvenirs, while the school was presented with a notice board for placing fourth.

The fifth and sixth prize winners had Junior Graphic souvenirs.

In an address, the Editor of the Junior Graphic, Mrs Mavis Kitcher, congratulated the contestants on making it to the final stage.

“What we are doing here is help every basic school child to learn to read, spell, write well and speak English language well. Students who avail themselves of this opportunity while in basic school will improve on themselves and be one of the best in school,” she added.
