An American tourist was mauled to death and another person severely injured in a South African lion park on Monday.
The female tourist and a friend were driving in Lion Park, a tourist destination just outside Johannesburg that advertises "super close-up animal views guaranteed," when the lion reportedly pulled the woman through the car window.
"We don’t know exactly what happened, we do know that there was a car driving to the lion camp and the lion did come through the window and it did bite the lady.
"Unfortunately the ambulance arrived quite soon but the lady has passed away," said the Lion Park's spokesman Scott Simpson to local South African radio station Eyewitness News.
The driver of the car was injured after trying to fend off the lion and was taken to a nearby hospital, reported Eyewitness News.
The lion attack is one of a series of violent episodes seen at the park this year, when an Australian tourist was bitten by a lion and a 13-year-old boy was attacked by a cheetah.
Guests are advised to drive with the windows up when they go through the Lion Park, which has seen celebrities such as Shakira and Rihanna pass through its doors.
Other attractions at the park include walking with cheetahs and posing for professional photographs with the animals.
