For almost a year, followers of one of the most popular shows since television was created had looked forward to the return of their “precious” (apologies to Smeagol or Lord of the Rings). Thankfully their wait is over as last Monday, Game of Thrones (GOT) returned to the small screen.
Whether it came back with a bang is not the issue, what is the issue is the fact that over the next 10 weeks, enthusiasts of the show will be reunited with their heroes, heroines, villains and all the characters that have made GOT a global phenomenon the past five years or so. We are in season 6.
Story of GOT is a story of the realities of greed, avarice and above all an unquenchable quest for power.
All the forces typified by family names want to be those ruling the real by occupying the Iron Throne. But who will eventually oust the Baratheons/Lannisters to do that?
That’s the question to which watchers of the adventurous series seek to answer. Who will eventually rule Westeros, if the White Walkers don’t obliterate the kingdom into nothingness?
It must be said that this is purely a US television series which airs on Mondays on HBO television. However, over the years, people around the world have seen it either through downloading on the internet or through rights acquired for local television.
Thankfully DStv has made it possible for us to watch on the same day as it is shown in the US and also repeats for those who may not be able to catch it.
Last Monday for example, the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6 showed at 11:00pm (Express from the U.S.). It will show again today at 8:00pm (Prime Time).
I have for a long time not been a fan of series partly because I have not seen one that would hold me on week to week basis and partly because getting hooked means making time and watching and so for a long time I stayed away.
However, Legend of the Seeker got my attention and sucked me into it and after that it is Game of Thrones which has got me hooked. I am among the people who have been smitten and have waited for so long for the coming of season 6.
So it is appropriate for me to be thankful to the old and new gods of Westeros and to the producers and all the people who have made it possible for the return of GOT to television.
We cannot wait to see how the story pans out and hope that this time they won’t kill the characters most loved by viewers.
We are going to see whether winter has finally come, whether the White Walkers will have their way, the dragons of the Targaryen princess Daenerys will breath fire on Kings Landing and environs, whether Cersei Lannister will exact her revenge on the Dornish woman and the High Sparrow, whether Roose Bolton’s bastard Ramsey will find his wife Sansa Stark and above all whether the most loved character Jon Snow will come back to life.
Here is to a great season on GOT!
Here we are again. Four years has come to meet us exactly where we were. The season that some love, some dread and others can’t be bothered about is here with us and glaring in our faces once again.
Indeed, it has been building up over time, but we just needed a jolt from the former minister of transport Dzifa Ativor to realise that we have entered another danger zone.
She has become the talk of the town since a video emerged that she had asked the people of the Volta Region to vote for the NDC to prevent the NPP from coming to power lest they jail former ministers of Ewe descent.
The radio and almost all programmes on it, same as television and the press as well as social media has been buzzing with most people condemning such rhetoric.
People have mentioned how some countries had thrown themselves into conflagration because of such ethnocentric matters.
Some people have said, “give the woman a break, others have said worse things”. In the political game all is fair =, it would seem to some and regardless of the consequences of our actions so long as it leads to the desired result there is nothing to be worried about.
Fact is that Madam Ativor gained lot of respect when she resigned during the aftermath of the bus branding saga. However, with this particular statement, she has wiped off some of that respect she gained.
It must be noted however that, this would not be the last we shall hear of such unfortunate comments we shall hear from our politicians on both sides of the divide.
As we delve deeper into the campaign season and we get closer to the day in November, we shall see and hear more of such actions and speeches.
It is important however for us a people to realise that we have our destiny and the unity of the country in our hands. We can either decide that ultimate political power with no one to govern is better than the peace we have had for years.
The choice is ours to either condemn or hail such comments as passed by Mrs. Dzifa Ativor. For me, I think she could have delivered whatever message she had for the people she addressed without the tribal slang she put on it.
