Light skin no guarantee for movie roles—Eva Adonoo
ONE long running perception about the movie industry is that light-skinned actors have an advantage in as far as getting roles are concerned but Ghanaian actress Eva Adonoo said it was not true.
In a recent chat with Graphic Showbiz, Eva said getting roles boiled down to one’s abilities and not skin colour.

“I don’t think so, the producers look at your stature and personality and how well you can deliver on the role other than complexion.
"For example, a 16-year-old cannot be given the role of a mother and vice versa so it is one’s ability to interpret the role well and not so much the complexion,” she explained.
There is no disputing the fact that the local movie industry has taken a downward turn in recent times, with the coronavirus pandemic making the situation even worse, leading to many people despairing. However, Eva is very optimistic that the industry will certainly bounce back.
“The movie industry has been stagnant for a while; things are not really going on as they should though some industry people are doing well to come out with a movie or series.
“The biggest problem has been lack of finance so filmmakers end up producing low budget movies. It was really a challenge before COVID-19, which has worsened things now.
“Though a few of my colleagues are trying to produce movies, things are not the same on set. One is extra careful on set, trying not to be exposed and all that but I have an ever-stronger inner conviction that the industry will bounce back soon. It is just a matter of time.
“In these days of digitisation, if Ghanaian producers produce good content and have platforms such as Netflix showing them, people will watch so I know the movie industry will see a revival soon,” she told Graphic Showbiz.
In the next five years, Eva hoped that the industry would have bounced back big time and she would be producing her own quality movies.
She encouraged up and coming actors to “stay focused and you will achieve whatever you want to achieve. Also remember to be prayerful and put God first in everything you do”.
After some minor roles in a number of movies, Eva was recognised for her role in Cheaters Book 2, in which she played one of the lead roles.
She has also starred in movies such as Red Rose, My City Diary, Grey Dust, Any Other Day, The Polymaths, How It Hurts and Love Language.
She has also appeared in Diaboress, Love Language, Hello December, a short film on YouTube and Altar of Grace, a television series.
Recently, Eva starred in the film Banjuri where she played the lead role as a princess and also in a television series Searching for a Wife, which shows on United Television.
A native of Keta in the Volta Region, Eva Adonoo was born to Ghanaian parents Jacob Adonoo and Susie Senahe. The beautiful actress has a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Northampton UK and currently works with one of the financial institutions in Ghana.
She is also an entrepreneur and philanthropist.
