I want to win a VGMA award - Obaapa Gyamfua

Everyone has a dream that ‘haunts’ them until it is achieved and for Akosombo based gospel artiste, Henrietta Gyamfua Nkansah known in showbiz as Obaapa Gyamfua, it is to win a trophy at the Ghana Music Awards.

Well, she may be on the path to making that vision a reality after being crowned the Best Gospel Artiste and Best Female Vocalist at the maiden edition of the Eastern Music Awards held at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua recently.

The win has been a booster for the Mordecai singer and she tells Showbiz she’s looking forward to walking home with a Gospel Artiste of the Year award at the Music Awards organised by Charterhouse in future.

With a competitive gospel industry, Obaapa Gyamfua admits though that such an accomplishment will not come on a silver platter.

“I know hard work pays and my win at the Eastern Music Awards attests to it.

If I continue to put more effort into my work, I know my dream of winning a VGMA plaque will come sooner than expected,” she said in an interview with Showbiz.

A member of the Methodist Church of Ghana, she honed her craft as a member of her church’s choir until she took the bold step and released her debut album, Anointing.

Songs on the sixth track album are Mordecai, Ye M’apedie Ma Me, Yesu Woa, Onam Mframa Mu, Han Bi Epie and Abraham.

However, since joining the industry, Obaapa Gyamfua says she hasn’t been impressed with the various organisations tasked with seeking the welfare of musicians.

“I will plead with MUSIGA, GHAMRO and all the other organisations to help the upcoming artistes.

We need help. We all start from somewhere so they should give us the platform we deserve,” she stated.

Currently, she is running her “Save Yourself, Save Your Family” project which seeks to preach a message of hope to people.
