Ghanaians to enjoy classical music
The needs of classical music lovers in Ghana will soon be met with the formation of the Classical Music Association of Ghana, made up of a few lovers of the music resident in Ghana.

Popular in other parts of the world, classical music and opera remain ‘novelties’ in Ghana and lovers of the genre always yearn for such an opportunity to enjoy it.
Thus the association is formed to provide a platform for lovers of classical music resident in Ghana to interact and increase listenership of the music and to bring the genre of music into mainstream music in Ghana.
The association will also among other things, organise concerts for world-class symphony orchestra to play in Ghana as well as facilitate collaboration between local and foreign symphony orchestras to develop local talents.
Membership of the association is open to all residents in Ghana and currently manned by the Executive Committee chaired by Mr Osei Wusu, the Secretary Ms Afia Korankyewaa Ntim and the Programmes Manager Mr Samuel Boadu Obeng.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Alex K. Osei-Owusu said, “We seek to make Ghana the hub of classical music in the sub-region to attract patrons to fly in to attend concerts.”
He said the association aimed at setting up an academy to train students on all instruments of play and to work towards the establishment of a full Opera house for operatic and ballet performance.”
Mr Osei-Owusu hinted that the association would form partnerships with renowned symphony and philharmonic orchestras from Europe, Asia, and America to play in Ghana to cater to both Ghanaians and expatriates living in the country.
He announced that the association is set to hold its maiden concert with its prime partners - Opera Mauritius, which is billed to put up two concerts in Kumasi and Accra on July 21 and 22 respectively.
“So, from 6p.m. to 10p.m. each date at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi and the National Theatre in Accra, patrons will be thrilled to a night of classical and opera,” Mr Osei-Owusu said, inviting music lovers to “come and experience symphony orchestra at its best.”
He said experts have confirmed that aside from enjoying the music, classical music had the potential of easing stress, sleep disorders and hypertension, adding, “We shall explore the therapeutic effect of classical music.”
