15th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards: A night to relish

Perhaps if dancehall artiste Shatta Wale knew he was going be crowned Artiste of the Year at the 15th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards held last Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre, he would not have missed the event. Shatta also won the Reggae/Dancehall category with his Dancehall King and the same song won him Vodafone Song of the Year.

After about two hours of red carpet, the event started after 10pm on a  very positive note with a spectacular performance from Castro.

He did a medley of his songs and some popular gospel tunes. Castro’s performance was undoubtedly a perfect opener for the night of music and dance.

As was expected, there was a lot of performances on the night and many of them scored high points while others were just ordinary as could be deduced from the crowd’s reaction.

Cindy Thompson wowed everyone as she had almost everyone singing along with her, one hit song after the another.

Sonnie Badu also did same and he scored high points as well. Others like Sarkodie, Samini, Kwadee, Daasebre Gyamena, Iyanya  and Davido from Nigeria all brought down the roof of the Conference Centre and got the crowd asking for more.

Bisa Kdei, MzVee, Guru, OJ, Jupiter, Stonebwoy, Kwabena Kwabena all took turns to perform to the delight of the audience.

A footage of musicians who had passed on recently was shown and it brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience.

Elikem of Big BrotherAfrica fame used the opportunity to present an award to propose to his sweetheart Pokello. Just before the two presented an award, Elikem went on bended knee, brought out a ring and asked, “will you marry me?” to which Pokello said “Yes.”

The audience screamed, an indication that they loved what Elikem the Tailor did because his act was impressive and probably the first to be seen at the VGMA.

For emerging New Artiste of the Year, Joey B took home a brand new car by courtesy of MUSIGA.

On the whole. It was a good show and organisers Charterhouse ought to be commended for pulling another VGMA off successfully. There were however a few moments where there was no action but that can be overlooked because the positives outdid those moments.
MCs were Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) and Eazzy.
