President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to announce a new person for the role of first Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in the coming days, following the retirement of Mr Millison Narh.

Mr Narh retired on Monday July 31, 2017 after 41 years of meritorious service to the central bank.

He paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo on Monday afternoon to announce his retirement.

A statement from the BoG said the President thanked Mr Narh for his dedicated service to the country, and wished him well in his retirement.

Present at the meeting were Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison.

Mr Narh has been with the central bank for over four decades, having joined the bank in 1976.

After serving in various roles, he was later appointed Second Deputy Governor of BoG on July 20, 2009, by late President, Prof Evans Atta-Mills.

He was subsequently elevated to First Deputy Governor on July 21, 2013 by President John Manama, a role he held until his retirement on Monday.

Mr Narh's retirement creates a vacuum that will be filled by an appointment, in line with the BoG Act.

It is not clear if the Second Deputy Governor, Dr Johnson P. Asiama, will be elevated to a First Deputy Governor or a fresh person will be made to step into the shoes of Mr Narh.

Should the president elevate one of the staff of the BoG to the vacant position, it could signal an attempt to maintain the status quo in monetary policy operations.

A fresh person from the banking sector will, however, be seen as an attempt to inject new blood and fresh ideas into the central bank operations.

Whatever the case, the views of Vice President Bawumia will come in handy, given his six years working experience with the central bank.

He was deputy governor for two years, until 2008 when he resigned to pursue his political ambitions.
