In 1991, the then head of state, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, cut the sod for the construction after all formalities had been met.

Due to lack of funds, the market could not be constructed until a Swedish NGO provided the seed money and with the co-operation of the assembly and government, some work started.

Actual construction started during President J.A Kufuor’s administration in 2001.
