GRIDCO blames ‘fault’ for Accra power outage

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has explained that the power outages in Accra and other parts of the country Friday afternoon, (January 17, 2020) was as a result of a fault developed on one of its transmission lines from Tema to Accra.

The fault which was discovered at 12:20pm on Friday resulted in the tripping of a number of the generation facilities of the company, leading to the outages,

"Our Maintenance team responded immediately to restore the affected transmission circuits and power supply has since been fully restored to all parts of the country at approximately 14:30pm," said a statement released by GRIDCO.

The company consequently apologised to the public for any inconvenience caused and said it remained committed to its mandate of delivering reliable power supply.

GRIDCo, incorporated on December 15, 2006 as a private limited liability company under the Companies Code, 1963, Act 179, undertakes economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from generating companies to bulk customers, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Mines.
