Golden Star Resources Limited has announced the appointment of Mr Daniel Owiredu to the Board of Directors of the company with immediate effect.
He retains his executive responsibilities in his current role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the company.
As the immediate past President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and a respected member of the Ghanaian business community, Mr Owiredu’s experience will be invaluable at the board level.
A statement issued by the company said he joined Golden Star in September 2006 as Vice President, Operations, and was appointed Executive Vice President Operations and Chief Operating Officer (COO) in January 2013.
He has more than 30 years of experience in the mining sector in Ghana and West Africa.
Until he joined Golden Star, the statement said, Mr Owiredu served as Deputy Chief Operating Officer Africa for AngloGold Ashanti.
It said prior to the merger between AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields, Mr Owiredu successfully managed the design, construction and operation of the Bibiani mine as well as the operation of the Siguiri, Obuasi and Fred Rebecca mines at various times.
According to the statement, he continued to make additional contribution to mining in Ghana as the immediate past President of the Chamber of Mines and to other sectors such as education and the technological advancement of Ghana.
Mr Owiredu was recently appointed chairman of the Board of the Ghana Commercial Bank, Ghana’s biggest bank.
Commenting on the appointment of Mr Owiredu to the Board, Chairman Tim Baker said: “Daniel’s knowledge and understanding of Ghana, along with his reputation for integrity in handling community issues, has made a huge difference to Golden Star’s ability to operate in the country.
“On behalf of all the directors, I am delighted to welcome him to the Board and look forward to working together more closely as we grow Golden Star’s operations over the next few years,” the statement quoted Tim Baker as saying.
