Chamber of Commerce to support women grow businesses

The President of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Nana Appiagyei Dankawoso, has expressed the chamber’s commitment to support women to establish and grow their own businesses.

He has, therefore, stated the chamber’s plans to engage various institutions to set up an equity fund to specifically support female women entrepreneurs.

Speaking to the media at a dinner for female members of the chamber on Tuesday, in Accra, Nana Dankawoso stated that some female entrepreneurs faced financial challenges that affected their operation as a result of difficult conditions put in place before credit facilities could be accessed from financial institutions.

He stated that it was for that reason that the chamber was taking strong measures to encourage Ghanaian women to establish their own businesses to employ others.

While urging more women into entrepreneurship, Nana Dankawoso said he found it encouraging that the number of women in the business sector had considerably increased over the past decade, stressing that “women’s economic empowerment is one of the world’s most promising areas of investment with almost instant results — the reduction and eventual eradication of poverty and widespread unemployment.”

Empower yourselves

The Managing Director) of Homefood Processing & Cannery Limited, Ms Felicia Twumasi, asked women to make conscious efforts to do more to empowerment themselves.

She explained that women needed to strive to acquire entrepreneurial skills to engage in profitable businesses that would enable them to support their respective families.

Moving forward, the Chief Executive Officer of the GNCCI, Mr Mark Badu-Aboagye, stated that the chamber would do more to bring gender parity in its own activities.
