2020 Tertiary Business Sense Challenge: UCC, UDS battle for coveted title today

Today (Saturday March 7, 2020) will witness the battle of slogans and academic prowess between two of the top most unversities in the country as they lock horns in their attempt to annex the coveted title of this year’s Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC).

While the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is poised to defend its title it won in the maiden edition last year, the University for Development Studies (UDS) is also determined to unseat the Cape Coast lads to claim the bragging rights.

The second edition of the TBSC, which is fast gaining grounds as one of the best thought leadership events in the country, witnessed great enthusiasm among students from the various business schools in the country.

The Executive Studio of TV3 Kanda came alive as the various contests went on during the last two weeks. While some came with their own slogans to cheer their contestants on to victory, others had to adopt after the exit of the rightful owners of the slogans.

For contestants from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the sound of “Go there boys.. Go there..” after answering their questions correctly was enough to make them forge ahead with more confidence.

For the University of Education, Winneba, “Show them” was enough to do the magic for their contestants.

The contest

Beyond the slogans, it was time to exhibit academic prowess when the main contest began on February 24.

Nineteen participating schools registered for this year’s competition and they include, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), All Nations University College, University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Technical University (KTU) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The rest are the University for Development Studies (UDS), Bluecrest University College, Wisconsin University College (WUC), Radford University (RU), Methodist University College (MUC), Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), African University College of Communications (AUCC), Central University College (CUC), Accra Technical University (ATU) and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Main competition

The second version of the TBSC began with UGBS facing All Nations University College and emerging winners at the first phase of the contest. The UGBS had 45.5 points while the All Nations University lost with 43.5 points.

The Accra Technical University also battled it out with the Accra Institute of Technology while Ho Technical University clashed with the GTUC in the second and third phase of the competition.

The first day of the competition was very engaging with the contestants being drilled by the quizmaster, Mr Alhassan Yusif Truwule. The subsequent sessions saw the other public schools meeting with other private schools to compete for the trophy.

The contests between KNUST and the CUC, AUCC and UEW as well as the UDS versus MUC, saw heated rounds of contests.

In an intense atmosphere, the competing schools exhibited great intellectual capabilities throughout the whole competition.

Interestingly, only the public schools emerged winners in the preceding stages, with six of them qualifying to the quarter finals stage of the competition.

The losing schools exited the competition with a renewed hope of returning fully prepared next year

The UCC journey

The defending champions, UCC made their maiden appearance in the contest at the final stage two contest for the quarter finals competing against the KTU. UCC managed to book their slot to the quarter finals with 66 points while KTU managed to score 25 points.

After securing their place in the quarter finals, they had the chance to meet the UDS and went ahead to beat them to progress to the semi-finals. At the end of the contest, UCC scored 72.33 points while UDS pulled 59 points.

The first semi-final contest of the day was between the KNUST, and the UCC. In what turned out to be a heated clash, the KNUST could not realise its dream of making it to the final stage as it scored 55.5 points while UCC won the day with 66 points.

After booking their semi-final place, the UCC lived up to its reputation as the defending champions and managed to secure their place in the finals after beating the KNUST. Although it was not an easy contest, the UCC managed to beat the KNUST with 66 points and progressed to the finals of the TBSC.

The UDS journey

The students from the Upper West Region came into the competition with a dream to secure their position at the finals.

The journey, however, was not an easy one as they had to struggle their way through to make it to the finals of the contest.

The UDS was able to beat the GTUC in the stage two contest with 54 points to secure their place in the quarter finals. GTUC exited the TBSC at this stage with 33 points.

After losing during the quarter final contest against the UCC, the school had the opportunity to come back into the semi-finals after becoming the losing school with the highest score.

At the semi-finals, the UDS put up a spirited performance against the UEW and managed to beat them to secure their slot at the finals. At the end of the contest, UDS won by accruing 65 points while UEW ended the contest with 53 points booking their place to face the UCC at the finals.
