16 companies, five individuals honoured at Ghana Insurance Awards

Players in the insurance industry last Friday gathered at the Kempinsky Hotel for the fifth edition of the Ghana Insurance Awards which seeks to celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies who have distinguished themselves in the industry in the year under review.


The Ghana Insurance Awards is a trademark owned by Xodus Communications Limited, organizers of Forty under 40 Ghana, Forty under 40 Africa, Ghana Oil and Gas Awards, Ghana Manufacturing Awards and Ghana Auto Awards

The GIA has since its inception in 2018 seek to promote the growth of the insurance industry through progressive competition, innovation and adherence to the highest professional standards

In all, 16 companies and five individuals were honoured at the fifth edition of the ceremony.

The Star Insurance Group was the biggest winner in the insurance category, with Star Life Assurance winning the Life Insurance Company of the Year, Personal Lines Insurance Company of the year, and Indigenous Insurance Company of the year.

The Star Assurance Company also won the General Insurance Company of the Year and the Brand of the year (General Insurance category.

Enterprise Insurance also won the Commercial Lines Insurer of the year and the Major Loss Award, with its Chief Executive Officer, Ernestina Abeh, also winning the CEO of the year (Insurance Category).

Enterprise Insurance and Enterprise Life were also inducted into the GIA Hall of Fame for winning the General Insurance Company of the year and Life Insurance Company of the year for three consecutive times.

Serene Insurance was also awarded as the Fastest Growing Company of the year, with Imperial General Assurance and Prudential Life Insurance also winning the Most Promising Insurance Company of the year and Brand of the year (Life Insurance category) respectively.

Old Mutual Ghana also walked away with the Marketing Initiative of the year award and the Product Innovation Award (Life Insurance category).

Metropolitan Life Insurance also won the Best Growing Company of the year (Life Insurance category),   

Private Health Insurance

In the private health insurance categories, Nationwide Medical Insurance won the ICT Leadership Award (Private Health), with Acacia Health Insurance winning the Brand of the year.

Apex Health Insurance won the Best Growing Company of the year and the Best Growing Company of the year.

Its CEO, Setsoafia-Tukpeyi Godwin Fafali won the CEO of the year.

Metropolitan Health Insurance Ghana was the biggest winner, winning the Private Health Insurance Company of the year.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye who was the Guest of Honour, was also awarded with a Special Recognition Award for his tremendous work at the NHIA.

Celebrating excellence

In his welcome remarks, Chief Executive Officer of Xodus Communications, Richard Abbey said the winners were selected by an independent advisory board who evaluated the awardees based on a criteria listed for each category.

He said the awards had over the last five years celebrated excellence and professional standards in the insurance industry and would continue to do so.

He noted that the Technical Committee and the Awarding Board have always been guided by reports by the National Insurance Commission, the NHIA and the companies themselves in determining its winners.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to the industry to embark on an aggressive education programme to educate and sensitise the general public on insurance products.

Dr Okoe Boye also commended nominees and winners for pushing the boundaries of excellence and quality services.
