The mentorship programme is aimed at getting more girls to lead and innovate in the technology world through learning how to code

The training was supported by 25 mentors who guided the girls on innovative ideas in using technology to detect counterfeit VLISCO fabrics.

Titled  "Style With Code" the girls were advised by their mentors to excel in the field of technology and be part of the next generation of IT experts.

The mentorship project which had impacted the lives of other girls in Ghana also seeks to build a large network of over 150 women studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the university level.

At the end of the training the girls were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The best group and their mentors were presented with VLISCO fabrics. All other participants also received certificates of participation.

The winning idea was to use RFID chips, GPS and Barcode scanning to detect and prevent counterfeiting in the textile industry.

Founder of Soronko Solutions and Vlisco Ambassador, Regina Honu said, “It is so powerful when women and girls get together to support each other. The girls had no idea who a software developer was or what coding is. But by the end of the workshop, they all left as new coders. The Tech Needs Girls movement continues.”

"Next year the first all girls coding and human centered design school will be built for girls in West Africa," she added.
