Atta Mills Memorial Tennis Tournament launched

The 2016 Atta Mills Memorial Tennis Tournament was launched today with the final set for July 30 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The tournament, organisers say will pay tribute to the former President's lasting legacy in sports. It is being put together by the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Foundation (JEAMF) in collaboration with Invictus Africa Investment Partners.

According to a board member of the JEAMF, Kodwo Atta Mills (a nephew of the late president), the tournament will witness contests in two categories reserved for professional and amateur players.

"The Atta Mills Memorial Tournament which starts today has two competitive categories and a coaching clinic. The senior players will compete for cash prizes while the amateurs will will vie for educational scholarships and tennis equipment.

"It is our belief that the players will pay a fitting tribute to President Mills with the best tennis skills because he was a promotor of sports in his days as a student and later in public service".

He added that he was hopeful the tournament will bring to the attention of the public the work of the Atta Mills Foundation who have handed out over GHC 300,000 worth of educational scholarships since it's inception in 2012.

The winners and runner-ups of the professional segment will take home GHC 4,500, GHC 2,500 and GHC 1,500 respectively while the top four players in the amateur segment will win scholarships worth GHC 1,000.
