WAFU Cup is ours to win

Ghana midfielder Winful Cobbinah scored a spectacular goal to hand Black Stars B a deserved 1-0 win against Mali last Saturday to send the Black Stars B to the semi-finals of the ongoing WAFU Cup of Nations at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Windful put up a man-of-the-match performance as Maxwell Konadu’s charges coasted to their third successive victory in the competition to raise the hopes of Ghanaians that the team was well be on their way to win the competition.

After the match, the Hearts of Oak playmaker expressed his confidence the WAFU Cup was Ghana’s to win after shaking off a poor start to dominate their two group games.

“Yes, that is our target and we will do everything possible to win it,” said Cobbinah.

“It is still early days to say we are the best to win the tournament; there are good teams also in there.

“But we will do everything possible to make sure we win, that is our goal.”

Cobbinah’s teammate, Amos Frimpong, also believes his team’s chances of winning the WAFU Cup lie in their own hands after qualifying to the semi-finals of the competition, writes Bernard Neequaye.

Frimpong was impressive in Ghana’s group wins over Guinea and Mali, but indicated that the team was not going to get carried away by the results so far, as they aim to work even harder in their subsequent matches in order to realise their dreams of winning the trophy.

In a chat with the Graphic Sports yesterday, Frimpong noted that the team needed to stay grounded, focused and also take their chances in subsequent matches in order to realise their ambition.

“We have the chance to win the trophy now after qualifying for the semis but I believe our destiny lies in our hands now and we must work towards it.
“It is just a matter of working harder and remaining focus and we are ready to do that to win the ultimate at the end of the tournament,” Frimpong said.

Ghana are expected to renew their rivalry with old foes Nigeria in Cape Coast today in their last group game whose result is more of academic purpose for Maxwell Konadu’s side. But the Stars B insist they are still fired up against their archrivals who need to avoid defeat to make it to the semis along Ghana.

The 25-year-old Asante Kotoko captain gave an assurance that his teammates were committed to taking every game seriously, today’s blockbuster clash no exception, despite securing a place in the semis.

He said a win against the Super Eagles would be a confidence booster and provide them with bragging rights ahead of their crucial games at the knockout stage.
