Table Tennis: Veterans win 3-nation tournament

Members of the Veterans Table Tennis Association of Ghana (VTTAG) are back in the country after excelling at a three-day competition held in Lome, Togo, last Saturday.

They beat their counterparts from Togo and Benin to emerge victorious in the ‘40 Years and Above, ‘50 Years and Above, 60 ‘Years and Above' categories.

Veterans were represented by Emmanuel Daitey, Reuben Okine, Emmanuel Nti, Anyway Kweku, and Edem Hayford in the ‘40 Years and Above’ competition.

Christopher King, Samuel Gyampo, and Richard Laryea represented the nation in the ‘60 Years and Above’ category, while Mr Robert Hammond, Jason Onyameh, Thomas Appiah, Kpeku Michael, Emmanuel Bannerman, and Leonard Vanderpuye participated in the ‘50 Years and Above’ category.

Ghana took gold in the fiercely competitive ‘40 Years and Above’ category by beating Benin 3-2 and defeating Togo 3-1 in the ‘50 Years and Above’ competition.

The Ghanaians again white-washed hosts Togo 3-0 in the 60 ‘Years and Above’ competition with Mr Gyampo (Secret Assassin) playing a key role in the victory for not losing a single match.

In the team events, Veterans beat their Togolese counterparts 3-0 to win gold.

The next competition will take place in Benin next year with Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria expected to participate alongside the host team.

Veterans president, Christopher King, lauded his teammates for their performance and called on them to remain focused, united, and proactive for the common to help develop the sport in Ghana.

"It is a sport that holds untold health benefits for people of all ages and sexes. It is fun to play and keeps us all forever young and healthy," he told the Daily Graphic.

He thanked Street Sense organisation for their support and their mission of keeping the roads in Ghana safe.

The Ghanaian delegation to the competition included former African champion, Ethel Jacks, who joined the team to boost their morale to ensure victory in the competition.

Ghana will host the event in 2024.
