Special coaching course for 200 in Kumasi

As many as 200 coaches across the country will converge in Kumasi to undertake a special coaching course that will offer them the skills of unearthing and developing the potentials of people with intellectual disabilities.

The coaching course, dubbed unified coaching, being sponsored by the Board of Special Olympics Ghana   will take place at the Garden City Special School in Kumasi from tomorrow October 27, to Thursday October 29.

 

Briefing Graphic Sports about the programme, the Board Chairman of Special Olympics Ghana, ACP Augustine Kokukorkor (Rtd) said the unified coaching course was designed to  create an atmosphere that would enable people with intellectual disabilities compete favourably  with able persons .

“ We want to start preparing our young athletes for the 2017 Special Olympics World Games scheduled for Austria, hence  the training of the coaches for them to start unearthing and developing the potentials of people with intellectual disabilities” he explained.

He said their recent participation in the Special Olympics World Games held in Los Angeles, where Ghana won four silver medals with only four athletes, revealed that many people with intellectual disabilities were yearning to offer themselves for training with the view of developing their potentials.

“We want to train many coaches, so that they can acquire the requisite skills to unearth and develop the potentials of people with intellectual disabilities” he noted.

According to ACP Kokukorkor (Rtd) the training course would coincide with a special programme for 50 young athletes aged between two and eight.

He said the young athlete programme will also converge at the Garden City Special School to compete in 100 and 200 metre events as well as other sports programmes with the view of creating competitive spirit among them.

He appealed to corporate bodies, institutions and individuals to support them in diverse ways to enable Ghana Special Olympics Board build a formidable team that will represent Ghana and win many medals during the 2017 World Games in Austria.
