The two-day sparring competition which is an Olympic discipline will take place at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.

An initiative of former national taekwondo star, Master Norbert Amefu, the competition is to train the youth aged between nine and 17 in the rudiments of the sport as well as prepare athletes for the nation for future international competitions.

Its objective was achieved early this year when 13-year-old Joseph Kuyon, a product of the Norlympics Taekwondo Academy, qualified to participate in the World Children’s Taekwondo Cultural Festival in South Korea.

Kuyon won silver after sparring with his contenders in the 28kg to 57kg competition.

More than 50 taekwondo schools and clubs are expected to take part in the event. They include Bethany Basic School, Providence International School, Beacon College International, Luthern Taekwondo Academy and Ecole Francaise Jacques Previer.

It is being organised under the auspices of the Greater Accra Taekwondo Association and sponsored by engineering and construction firm KEPCO E&C, whose General Manager, Lee Han Woo, has recognised the talents that abounds in Ghana in the game.

Mr Han Woo told the Daily Graphic his outfit would continue to sponsor the events to grow the competition and nurture talents for the country.
